Optrix HD Sport Case For iPhone And iPod Touch

Optrix HD Sport Case For iPhone And iPod Touch

Recently, we told you about the Optrix HD sport case that essentially turns your iPhone 4/4S or iPod touch (fourth generation) into a rugged, water resistant, mount anywhere sports camera (see: GoPro). Optrix was kind enough to send me one to test, so let’s see what it can do.

It's almost like a puzzle.

Inside the Optrix box were the Optrix waterproof case (which features a 0.5mm membrane that allows you to interact with your device’s touchscreen while it’s in the case and a metal pin that pushes through the case to activate your device’s lock button), the iPhone and iPod touch “sleds” (red), a curved base (for helmet mounting), and a flat base (for anywhere else you might want to mount your phone). A metal quick release handle secures the clear case to the mount of your choosing.

Individually, each piece doesn’t look like it can offer much protection for your precious iDevice, but looks can be deceiving. The Optrix case feels like an old cassette tape box, while the membrane feels like it can break or detach itself from the case with minimal effort. Surprisingly, it can take a good amount of abuse. I dropped a small hammer onto it several times with no signs of the membrane starting to break. On their own, the sleds look like generic third party iDevice cases, but are actually perfectly form-fitted for your device.

Once you’re ready to start shooting, putting your device into the Optrix takes a few steps. You must put your iPhone or iPod touch into its respective sled, then push it down into the Optrix. There is a small tab on the sled to help with removal, however, it may prevent the top of the case from closing. Thankfully, the instructions say it is fine to push the tab down to allow the case to close. After the device is safe in its sled, and the sled is safe in the Optrix, it all gets sealed in with a suitcase-style closure. One lever on the lid of the Optrix case catches a lip on the bottom portion, and you pull another lever which pulls the case together sealing it shut. A metal latch then hooks on to the top of the Optrix, preventing it from opening. Your iDevice is now ready to take on some extreme outdoor shenanigans.

After you close and lock the case, you're good to go!

Sadly, there is nothing extreme to do outdoors where I’m located, so I thought I’d see how well the Optrix would hold up against high speeds and bumpy roads. To do this, I mounted the Optrix on a motorcycle helmet, then the roof of my car. Using my phone through the protective membrane worked with no problems whatsover. After a few last-second checks, I was good to go.

I should note that I used the same mount with the same 3M mounting pad for both applications and it held up just fine, with no apparent loss in adhesiveness. As you can see, the mount absorbs shock very well and anyone with an iPhone 4S will get the added benefit of automatic video stabilization. I wasn’t too worried with my phone falling off while mounted to the helmet, but I was worried the wind speeds while driving would turn my phone into electronic roadkill. To my surprise, the mount was completely secure while driving 50-60 mph. I would have gone faster, but I didn’t think the Optrix would’ve gotten me out of a speeding ticket.

The Good
The Optrix HD is very sturdy when it’s put together. While I didn’t sacrifice my phone for a drop test, I don’t doubt that my phone would be fine from a reasonable fall at a reasonable speed. Thankfully, if for some reason your case gets damaged, Optrix will send you a new one for $20. The Optrix HD is easy to set up and you can order as many mounts as you may need (which may also be a bad thing).

The Bad
It would have also been nice to include extra adhesive strips. Each base comes with an adhesive strip attached, but unless you buy more, you’re stuck with one flat and one curved surface to mount the Optrix on. That is, unless you’re willing to rip it off one surface and put it on another, like I did. Also, I wish that there was a way to mount your phone on something vertical while your device was in it’s landscape orientation. Being restricted to horizontal mounting surfaces and device orientation wasn’t ideal to me (I HATE iPhone videos shot in portrait).

See what I mean?

Verdict
For its price, I think that the Optrix HD’s price ($89.99) is only worth it if you’re in the market for something like the GoPro ($149-$299) and would use it often. Prior to this, I’ve been using a generic smartphone tripod mount and Joby Gorrillapod to mount my phone on random things. My setup cost me about $30. Having to spend an extra $10-$20 on extra adhesive strips and mounting bases will add up to be a big pain over time, especially if your wallet’s still mad at you for spending $89.99 on a case that you may not use very frequently.

So, overall, this isn’t a product for everyone. Though, I admit, I would recommend it to someone that I knew was already in the market for a sports camera, and just so happened to have an iPhone 4/4S or iPod touch. It’s price can only be justified by how much use you would personally get out of it. It works as described, but may cost you a lot of money in the long haul.

You can check out the Optrix HD, videos, and more on the Optrix website.

MacWorld 2012: Vito Technology Announces Rocket Tracking

Vito Technology is known for its stunning education apps, such as Star Walk, Solar Walk, and Geo Walk. Star Walk is an award-winning stargazing app, which allows users to view constellations, satellites, and other heavenly objects. There are versions for both the iPhone and iPad. Solar Walk is a universal app, which features a beautiful scaled three-dimensional model of our solar system. Where Star Walk lets you explore the stars, Solar Walk gives you a view of the planets.

At MacWorld, Vito announced that both apps would soon be able to track rockets launched by the Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, more commonly known as SpaceX. SpaceX is an American space transport company, which designed the Falcon 1 and Falcon 9 space boosters. It also developed the Dragon spacecraft, which helped SpaceX earn contracts with NASA.

Vito also has a partnership with the European Space Agency. The first fruit borne from that relationship was the Spectrum Bar feature introduced in an earlier version of Starwalk; users slide their finger up and down the spectrum bar to change the wavelength and color of the sky. Vito has indicated that the cooperation between the two organizations should yield further benefits in future versions of the apps.

Finally, Geo Walk is continuously being updated, with its latest version released just earlier this week. The update gave a new Earth texture for a more thorough zoom in. It also featured some new design and animation, as well as the ability to connect to Vito through Facebook and Twitter.

Here at AppAdvice, Vito Technology’s apps have generally been well received. Star Walk was listed as an “essential” app in our stargazing AppGuide. Both Star Walk and Solar Walk made our “iPad Apps For Reference” AppList. We’re excited to hear that Vito is making further improvements to their already solid apps. How about you? Are you a fan? What added functionality would you like to see in future updates? Please feel free to comment below.

Kungl Tripod Adapter Connects Your iPhone To A Tripod

Kungl Tripod Adapter Connects Your iPhone To A Tripod

I’ve been writing about apps that benefit from use of a tripod recently, such as GroupShot and Average Camera Pro. As it happens, the Kungl Tripod Adapter came across my desk, and I thought some of our users might be interested in such a product.

Most regular cameras have what is called a tripod mount on the bottom. It’s essentially a threaded hole. Tripods that photographers use have a standard 1/4 inch screw, which allows you to attach virtually any camera to any tripod. Cell phones, the iPhone in particular, have recently become extremely popular for upscale photography, but of course they lack the tripod mount. If you want to use a tripod for your iPhoneography, you’ll have to purchase a special tripod or some kind of adapter than allows you to use a regular tripod.

The Kungl Tripod Adapter is essentially a hard plastic bumper case with a 1/4 inch tripod mount embedded into it.  It will not act as a stand-alone tripod, rather, it’s an adapter for people who want to use a regular photography tripod.

Simply slide your iPhone 4/4S into the Kungl and you’re ready to go. Thread it on the tripod of your choice. You can keep the Kungl case on your phone when you’re not using it for photography; it’s nearly as compact as the Apple bumper. If you like to keep a decal skin on your iPhone, that will work fine with the Kungl.

So, if you’re an avid iPhoneographer who owns (or plans to buy) a tripod already and you’re looking for a compact tripod adapter for your iPhone, check out the Kungl Tripod Adapter. It’s available on their website, or Amazon for about $20.

MacWorld 2012: The iWow Audio Enhancement Adapter Goes Universal

SRS Labs made an appearance at this year’s MacWorld event. The company’s iWow 3D line was on display and they are having a huge sale to celebrate this weekend’s convention.  Watch the full video below for the discount code.

The iWow 3D is an audio enhancement adapter for the iPhone, iPod and iPad that creates a fuller, more natural sound. It dynamically locates and restores audio details to deliver deep, rich bass, turning an iDevice into a mobile stereo system in your head.

The deluxe package comes with custom-made detachable ear buds and additional color faceplates so users can customize their iWow to fit their mood or their outfit. For added control over the sound quality, there is a free app that lets users adjust the audio settings and select which type of external audio system the device will be plugged into; headphones, car or external speakers.

SRS Labs was also at MacWorld to announce the upcoming launch of iWow Universal, or iWow U, which is a universal version of the iWow 3D. It works with any device that has a three-quarter inch jack, including Android-based devices and laptops.

The iWow 3D Deluxe costs $79.99, while the unit alone is $59.99. They are available now from the company’s website. The iWoW U will be available at the end of March. There is no information as to its cost, but presumably it will be comparable to the 3D model. Check out the video below to find out how to get the iWoW 3D for half price.

Average Camera Pro Improves Your Photos In Low Light Conditions

Average Camera Pro by Dominik Seibold icon

Average Camera Pro ($0.99) by Dominik Seibold is an interesting little app that can improve your iPhone’s camera performance in low light conditions. You absolutely need a tripod in order to use this app, or at least place to prop up your camera. It will not work at all if you are holding the camera in your hand.

Average Camera Pro by Dominik Seibold screenshot

Let’s start with a room that is not particularly well-lit, such as in the flower pictures I took. The “Before” shot was taken with the iPhone’s native camera. The “After” shot was done with Average Camera Pro. You may not see a huge difference in the lighting between the two shots. But look a little closer, particularly at the purple wall behind the flowers. The noise is significantly reduced in the shot I took with Average Camera Pro.

Next, take a look at the featured photo, the before and after shots of my chicken pitcher. These shots were taken in a very dark corner. You can see that the “Before” shot, taken with the native camera (no flash), is totally useless, entirely dark. The “After” shot, taken with Average Camera Pro, while not perfect, at least allows you to see the object in the photo.

In both cases, I used the very simplest settings. I let the app do all of the work and did not fiddle with the settings at all. The way the app works is that it takes a number of photos (the default is eight) and uses the best information from each one to get the best photo in low light that you can. I did use a tripod; as I mentioned earlier, the app will not work if you try to hold the camera in your hands.

Watch the video within the app (or go to the link here if you want to see the video now) to get more advanced instructions from the developer on how to use the app for even better results. The number of photos taken can be altered, up to 164. You can use a slider to further lighten your photos. Also, you can use a white piece of paper to set a baseline for your shot for even better lit photos and noise reduction.

If you find yourself unsatisfied with the iPhone’s low light performance and you hate the washed-out flash look, then Average Camera Pro is an app worth checking out.

According to the document, the added support will include “common procedures, information about feature and specifications and other basic device questions.”

It’s nothing major, but at least T-Mobile USA is recognising that a chunk of its user-base are iPhone owners, and is looking to support these customers.

T-Mobile to Offer Additional Support for iPhone Users on Its Network

U.S. carrier T-Mobile has decided to offer “additional support” to customers using the iPhone on its network, reports TmoNews. While T-Mobile doesn’t sell the iPhone, it reports that more than 1 million unlocked iPhones are used on its network and the additional support will be useful to T-Mobile’s less tech-savvy iPhone users.

T-Mobile will support users who have questions about “common procedures, information about feature and specifications and other basic device questions.” Most T-Mobile iPhone users are limited to T-Mobile’s slower EDGE network due to the iPhone’s incompatibility with the 1700/2100 MHz bands used by the carrier for its faster data networks. Late last year, though, some of T-Mobile’s towers were adjusted for its faster HSPA+ network, moving them to the iPhone-accessible 1900MHz band in some “pockets” of the country.

Earlier this month, T-Mobile claimed the next iPhone chipset could be capable of supporting the carrier’s Advanced Wireless Spectrum, but noted that it didn’t have any specific knowledge of Apple’s future products.
