You know how Apple can’t help but say “magical” every time it mentions the iPad. Well, it seems at least one user took this literally… for us to enjoy. Check it out:

Another spin on iPad humor spreading across the web today is an interesting mashup of Star Wars footage and the iPad unveiling keynote. I’m quite amazed at how well these two pieces of geekery fit together. Check it out:

Elegant Pulse News Reader Takes On The App Store

photo.PNG e1275348639843 642x481 Elegant Pulse News Reader Takes On The App Store

The iPad makes for a great reader and skimming through RSS feeds on a sofa is probably one of the device’s most interesting uses so far. A great app for that, and my personal favorite, has always been NetNewsWire, but it’s being challenged today by an interesting newcomer; Pulse.

Created by two Stanford graduates, Pulse is, in short, an attractively packaged RSS aggregator. Instead of the traditional list of posts, feeds are displayed as a mosaic and you navigate through them by swiping the screen. Posts can be opened in either a text-only format, similar to Instapaper Mobilizer, or directly in a Webview. You can then share posts via Twitter, Facebook and email.

While Pulse is based on RSS feeds and syncs with your Google Reader account, it’s trying to be more user friendly by letting you add sources with a search function. What it seems to actually be doing is picking up RSS feeds with a Google search. It has its advantages. For example, you can add many feeds easily (including Twitter), on the downside however you might not find all your sources this way (i.e. AppAdvice at the moment).

Pulse’s layout is very fresh and appealing, it looks like what you would expect on a tablet, but it comes with some serious downsides that might turn you off. It’s limited to 20 different feeds, it doesn’t really let you keep track of what you read already and the text viewer doesn’t support video. It also seems the only way to fetch new posts is a restart and some posts will still be delayed. You also won’t be able to fetch older posts.

If you’re just a light user with a couple of feeds and want them to look good, Pulse will be perfect for you. If, on the other hand, you’re a power user you’ll be quickly going back to your old aggregator. As for pricing, it goes for $3.99, which is actually fair in this category considering the design effort.

Here is how it looks like on video:

Lastly, its developers provided us with two extra free copies for you to win. Just leave a comment or retweet to participate.

Pulse News Reader is available in the iPad App Store now for $3.99

Review: Assault Squadron – Sci-Fi Shoot ‘Em Up For A True Shot of Adrenaline

IMG 0225 Review: Assault Squadron Sci Fi Shoot Em Up For A True Shot of Adrenaline

Overview

Assault Squadron has finally hit the App Store after our initial preview from GDC. The sci-fi shoot ‘em up genre is relatively sparse in the App Store, but has received one action packed game. There is an overload of firing by you and enemy ships with all of it running at 60 frames per second.
IMG 0953 200x300 Review: Assault Squadron Sci Fi Shoot Em Up For A True Shot of Adrenaline

Features

The game features six intricately tied levels in campaign mode with each one featuring an epic boss battle. There is an arcade mode to play one particular level, and throughout the game there are four different upgradable ships. Crystal is included for online high scores and achievements.

The Good

If you’re even remotely interested in the shoot ‘em up genre you will have a great time with Assault Squadron. The game is bursting at the seams with non stop action that will have you fighting for your life every second you’re playing. There is a constant stream of enemies and enemy fire coming at you that you need to dodge while staying on line to fire upon enemies.
IMG 0944 300x200 Review: Assault Squadron Sci Fi Shoot Em Up For A True Shot of Adrenaline
As you blast away enemies they leave behind orbs that you collect to upgrade the weaponry of your ship. There are all types of enemy ships to face, each with their own weaponry and tactics that are extremely difficult to get rid of based on sheer numbers. The game is all about combos which is consecutively destroyed enemies without taking damage, and it allows for astronomical scores like classic shoot ‘em ups.

The game has a great feature where all six levels are completely intertwined. You play through one in portrait mode as a top down shooter. Then the next level is the same environment, but with a landscape perspective as a side scrolling shooter. You get to experience two different types of shooter styles in the same game with an actual connection between the styles.

A deluxe storyline is included that is very hard to find for an iPhone game. The campaign mode reveals the story nicely, and playing through all six levels will make it well worth your money. These aren’t merely levels, but provide as much action as a multiple staged level in most other games.
IMG 0951 200x300 Review: Assault Squadron Sci Fi Shoot Em Up For A True Shot of Adrenaline
Each level also has a tremendously difficult boss that will take a few minutes to dispose of even when constantly firing on it. The game is a score based game so it’s nice to have Crystal to compare scores, and the ability to go for score only in arcade mode. It’s also nice to have a campaign with a score based game especially as deluxe as this one is that will take multiple retires to get through all six of these levels.

The game is absolutely wonderfully designed, and one of the best looking on the platform. The tons of action runs silky smooth, and it’s miraculous seeing that many ships and enemy fire on screen. The backgrounds are exquisite as well while all of the explosions are occurring in the foreground.
IMG 0942 200x300 Review: Assault Squadron Sci Fi Shoot Em Up For A True Shot of Adrenaline
The game also features amazing cut scenes that seem to be right out of a huge budget movie. There is a deluxe action packed techno soundtrack to go with the game perfectly. The four different control methods work well though tilt is tough for this type of game, and having your finger on screen blocks some of the action.

The Bad

The main problem with the game is the sheer difficulty. It’s definitely a title for more hardcore gamers who have experience with this style, otherwise it will just feel too difficult. Even with experience you will realize relatively quickly that there isn’t much room to maneuver to avoid enemy fire.
IMG 0946 300x200 Review: Assault Squadron Sci Fi Shoot Em Up For A True Shot of Adrenaline
You will burn through a number of lives in seemingly impossible situations with an overload of enemy fire. You do get a lot of mistakes with four health units per life, and ten continues when you run out of health. The Binary Mill did the best they could with the space given by the phone, but in all honesty it’s to crammed to be able to successfully handle this game.

You need to have the finest precision in your movements, and even then sometimes you can’t even see a proper path through the fire. Also your finger covers up part of the limited screen real estate so you may miss some danger areas.

The Verdict

Assault Squadron isn’t a game for everyone, but for people who know the shoot ‘em up they will absolutely fall in love with it. The game is non-stop action that works as an adrenaline injection as you dodge hundreds of enemy bombs on screen at once. You will be pushed to your limits making it through the six deluxe levels, and huge boss battles.

For $2.99 Assault Squadron is a should buy, and even higher if you’re a shoot ‘em up fan. Be warned though that it may be too challenging if your used to casual games.

Enflick Launches PingChat! 2 For iPhone. Android and BlackBerry Versions Coming Soon

pingchat2 Enflick Launches PingChat! 2 For iPhone. Android and BlackBerry Versions Coming Soon

Gary Fung’s extremely popular Ping! iPhone-to-iPhone messenger was replaced over the weekend by its official successor, PingChat! 2.  No one will be crying over the demise of the original, however, as this new messaging app features a brand new UI, tons of new features, and is available for free.

PingChat! 2 resembles the original in functionality, as it provides iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users with a way to communicate directly with other iDevice users via text messages and media messages.  You and your recipient will also still need to have a registered PingChat! ID in order to communicate, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end.

pingchat2 screen1 300x200 Enflick Launches PingChat! 2 For iPhone. Android and BlackBerry Versions Coming SoonPingChat! 2 features a new UI that’s very simple to use and doesn’t require you to dig through menus to activate features like the previous version.  Media messaging is now available free of charge instead of as an in-app purchase, and the app also now supports voice notes.  Another big addition is group messaging, allowing multiple users to have a conversation in one easy to view screen.

The original version of Ping!, which was downloaded over three million times, had quite a few server issues and sometimes messages would get lost in the shuffle.  PingChat! 2 addresses that issue with new servers and infrastructure provided by Enflick, and a new message confirmation indicator that instantly shows you whether or not your message has been received and viewed.

PingChat! 2 improves on the original in almost every way while still providing all of the features that allowed it to compete with other similar apps in the App Store.  Although, even with all of these improvements, its biggest selling point may wind up being the fact that it’s available for free.  The app currently is ad-free, but after the introductory promotion, ads will begin to pop up.  These ads will be removable via in-app purchase if you so choose.

Enflick has also promised that PingChat! 2 will be available for both Android and Blackberry in the near future, which will finally allow you to go outside of your iDevice messaging circle.

Review: Voodo

IMG 0041 1 Review: Voodo

IMG 0042 1 200x300 Review: VoodoThe Overview

From the simple list – “Get Milk, Deposit Paycheck, Buy Bouquet, Beg Forgiveness” to an extremely elaborate project management system complete with deadlines and Gantt charts, “To Dos” (better called Task Managers) are the basis of what we would call “productivity.” And the App Store provides us the entire range from the simplicity of the built-in, free NotePad to complex, expensive things like, well, Things.

Each of these apps fits a different audience and their needs – are you a simple list jotter who needs to remember errands to run? Do you need to be reminded of reccurring tasks such as paying bills or taking meds? Are you looking more to organize a monumental list of tasks that have interdependence in order to get accomplished?

Voodo falls in between the two extremes. It has a very powerful tagging system for grouping tasks together (even by where the tasks needs to be done). It also has a customizable badge icon that can display how many items need to be done NOW – whether, for you, that is the next couple of hours of next couple of days.

The FeaturesIMG 0040 1 200x300 Review: Voodo

One of Voodo’s most distinctive features compared to other To Do apps is its filing tasks by geographic location. Create as many different location as you like and mark them using Google Maps. Instead of being a simple To Do item, it becomes more like a “next time I am at X, I will…” item.

You get to make as many custom tags as you like and tasks can have any number of tags. This allows sorting of tasks into convenient categories instead of just simple priorities. Tags are also auto-pruned after they have been left unused for a period of time.

With the tagging system, you can also create a powerful Getting Things Done system. If you’re not already part of the cult of GTD, google it….you may just find yourself pre-fixing all your tasks with ‘@’ ‘_’ ‘#’ et. al.

The Breakdown

The Good

Voodo is built the way I like ‘em: lots of options and power under the hood but a simple, clean set of controls. You can easily set up any number of tasks and use Voodo as a basic checklist style app. Or you can create a a complex system of tags to keep your entire life organized with ToDo goodness.

Syncs up with your Google Calendar account using a special sub calendar called Voodo. This is done in the background whenever you have an active connection – no need to worry about it!

The Bad

No way to set up recurring tasks within the app, itself. You need to either set up a recurring task in Google calendar and let it sync. Or set up a one time task in Voodo then after it syncs it to Google, set it up as a repeating task there. Wonder if that means I have to set up a second task to make sure I update Google. :)

Otherwise, the worst thing about Voodo is that in order to mine a lot of its best features you have to RTFM. As a long time Mac user, I’ve always found reading the manual a chore. But, honestly, Voodo does such a good job of hiding many features to keep the interface elegant, you really DOhave to read the instructions to figure out all you can do with it. So suck it up and read, already.

IMG 0001 200x300 Review: VoodoThe Verdict

Reviewing To Do apps sometimes feels like an effort in futility. All reviews almost boil down to “I would recommend this To Do app if you were looking for this, this and this but not that and your budget was between x and y.” With Voodo it feels more like “Unless you need the high end project manager functions, Voodo will cover a wide spectrum of your Task Management needs.”

So, I highly recommend it except when we consider the budget part of the equation. With so many free and cheap apps out there that include a ToDo checkmark in there logo, there doesn’t seem to be any need to shell out the $5 for Voodo. However, Voodo has a depth of features I barely started to scratch over the two weeks I used it. If you’re unsure, grab the Lite version. It is somewhat crippled – but not so much you can’t get a good idea of what this Task Manager can really do.

Apple has announced today that it just sold yet another million iPads, which brings iPad sales in the last 60 days to – wait for it – 2 million units. Complimentary Steve Jobs quote included:

Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do. We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone.

More seriously, this is an impressive milestone for any product and even more so for a completely new kind of devices like the iPad.  It also looks like sales are holding well as Apple sold its millionth iPad only a month ago.
